Find the Little Extremist in You

Do you feel constrained in your writing? Like you’re trying to please someone or that there are certain issues or questions you don’t want to ask because they’re too close to home, you don’t have an answer for them, or you feel vulnerable asking them? I do. I always heard that writing should be freeing, but half the time, I feel like I’m just as claustrophobic in the world of words as I often am in my social world. So let’s try something. Next time you feel that way, force yourself to write. Force yourself to ask the most extreme form of the question you’re feeling at the time. Make yourself write the most extreme version of that scene you’re trying to get out. Choose the most outlandish, ridiculous idea in your arsenal and take it to the next level. You can always edit later. It’s easier to reign something back in than it is to push it out. So go a little crazy!
